I'm sure by now we have all seen at least one news segment or read an article about the most recent beef scare and witnessed the horrible news footage of animal abuse that occurred.
When I saw it, I was completely disgusted that any human being could treat an animal, who was obviously sick, with such cruelty and anger. I wanted to do something about it. Not to the extent of joining P.E.T.A. or anything (since they're a bunch of crazy assholes... don't believe me? watch the Penn & Teller: Bullshit episode) but I wanted to do something to stop this horrific animal cruelty.
Which led me into a moral dilemma. How could I speak out against the treatment of these animals when I eat them. More importantly, what right to I have to judge when I eat these animals but could never kill one myself for food.
Don't get me wrong, I think that if you kill an animal yourself for food, leather, etc... and you do so in a humane way then you have every right to say and think what you want (I'm thinking along the lines of the way Native Americans hunt for survival). However, I don't think anyone has the right to get on a high horse and speak out against something like this when they themselves reap benefits without having to do the dirty work.
In addition, as many of you already know, animals have always held a soft spot in my heart.
Therefore I am giving up eating meat.
Don't worry, I'm not going total hippie-vegetarian on you. I'm still going to eat fish and, every once and a while, poultry because I believe I would be capable of hunting those if I had to for survival. I'm just not going to eat red meat, pork, or anything like that.
Yes, I am going to miss hamburgers on the 4th of July, pepperoni pizza, and my Dad's awesome spaghetti & meatballs, but my heart says this is right.
-P.S. Sorry if this jacks up your wedding menu Gina. I can eat around things!
